The ducks look good, although it would have been nice to have had the mallard's head
turned for a better profile. Cloning along the top needs fixing.

If I was looking through my viewfinder and saw this scene my first thought would be that
there's too much clutter in the upper area. Chances are they're going to move down the
slope and maybe even get back in the water. If you stayed on higher ground and shot
at a downward angle you'd have some snow, water, and ducks. Or maybe just water
and ducks. A cleaner composition either way.

I think I would clone down from the top edge to under the horizontal branch above the ducks leaving just a touch of the tree in the upper right hand corner... then you would have a composition consisting of only water and the ducks which is what you were trying to capture to get the sense of which duck was going to enter the water first. It's a shame the mallard didn't turn its head to the left.

Oops. I shouldn't comment so early in the morning. I think drake was the word I
wanted. They are both mallards.

Thanks for the comments.
I cut the branches clutter on the top of the photo. I hope it looks better.
As for the head of the male, it would have been better indeed if it had been turned . But there were about 50 ducks very next and I was lucky to isolate this couple.

The rework is better, but sometimes it is better to resign yourself to the fact it has not
worked , learn the lesson, go out and shoot some more!

What is that slice of trunk for in the upper right corner of the OP?

I like the crop.

The slice looks like an action of cloning but it is certainly accidental because I don't remember using it here. I had not noticed it when I submitted.
