At night in the CSX rail yard

This image was taken in the Flomaton, Alabama-USA, CSX railroad yard on the evening of 17 May 2011. The in-camera setting for sodium-vapor lighting was used.


Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: AF 85mm f1.4D Nikkor
ISO: 5000
Used a tripod.

This image is best viewed against a grey background... gives more presence to the engine set against the dark night time sky. I wish that there had been a little sense of motion... perhaps not as much as the picture previous to this but I just find the image a little static nevertheless an interesting view of these beasts of burden.

With an ISO of 5000 I would have expected the photo to be very grainy. From the specs you provided that is a very clever photo.

Set up is surprising, Gerald... :)
Result so beautiful.
The green trees in the background can be clearly seen. The engine, in
full light, express all its power in the cold night.
Correction for sodium lighting is perfect.
The use of tripod was mandatory, I suppose.
