Wood Duck

It's the first for me to see a wood duck here in NS. Was out walking at a local pond and was pleasantly surprised to see one. He was constantly on the move and couldn't get as close as I wanted but for a point and shoot compact it's not too bad of a shot. Beautiful little duck though.;-)

The contrast between the color and markings on the wood duck and the blue water really serves to make the water bird visually stand out in the image. I find them a hard bird to photograph in comparison to say a Canadian goose or other ducks... very skittish is what comes to mind.

Another great shot Sandi. We have plenty Wood ducks here in Mtl. Did
you know hat Wood ducks roost on tree branches? Strange site to see
web footed ducks perched on a branch

No, I didn't know that the wood ducks roost on tree branches. It must be comical looking to see that. These ducks are not common here but I know they are common in Ontario and Quebec. I am hoping to get another shot of this bird standing on a rock or something.;-)

Likely the most beautiful of all ducks. If I was clicking at your spot I would take this
photo then use a little of my limited patience to see if he/she would paddle into a clear
area of water.

I found this image from 2007 of 4 wood ducks (male, female, male, female) perched on a diagonal leaning tree trunk in Assiniboine Park here in Winnipeg. They look quite comfortable... odd but comfortable.

That's pretty amazing, Jan, that they can do that.;-)
