Morning Powwow

At the Birdbath

The birds gather every morning at the birdbath like
clockwork. I've got a couple birdbaths on my property --
this one is right outside my office window.

Bluebirds and finches. That's a flicker (I believe) on the
far left (a little cut off).

I posted this photo on another site and someone said the bird on the
far left looks like a Cedar Waxwing. I didn't think they came this
far south. Anyone have any ideas?

just read that my area is, indeed, included in the winter range for
Cedar Waxwings...

The sense of the meeting at the water cooler... love the colors, the detailing and just the nature of the poses (seems like something off to the right has focused a number of the birds).

Cool shot. Look like a bunch of sunbathers watching for their umbrella drinks to arrive. Man, your baths do draw a crowd! I admit to a bit of envy.

My bath attracts doves, robins, towhees, finches, song sparrows, yellow jackets, algae, and mud. The towhees get up early, early and muck around in the dewy understory where they get absolutely filthy. Guess what they do next? I love 'em, but they do make a mud puddle of the bath every day they are around. Most everyone is gone now. Two Big Storms coming to Washington this weekend, so the birdies were wise to leave town.

Thanks Jan and Michael. Much appreciated.

Michael: I have a lot of the same birds around here but, luckily, the
towhees and doves don't normally visit the baths (the doves like the
pool, where they leave a big mess. Yuk.). The biggest problem lately
is the yellow jackets. The birds don't seem to mind a couple yellow
jackets. But in the afternoons, the yellow jackets completely take
over the baths and the birds won't come near.

Beautiful.

Wow, that's some party. You have beautiful birds in your area. Of all the birds at your bath we only have the cedar waxwings here.;-)

So much colour! We have finches, but very rarely. Lots of cedar waxwings feeding on
the mountain ash and cotoneaster berries in winter. There are still a few geese flying
over, but the birds that filled my back garden last week seem to have left for warmer
climes.

Thanks, Paul, Sandi and Linda.

Sandi/Linda: interesting that you have lots of cedar waxwings. Until
now, I've never seen them immediately around my house, but they're
apparently abundant in the SF bay area in the winter months. I saw
two (male/female) at the birdbath yesterday. Very cool-looking birds.
