Journey to Churchill, Assiniboine Park Zoo

Missed the last three weeks with the polar bears and so I closed out 2016 by going to the Journey to Churchill exhibit and found one of the bears playing in the water and the bear did not fail to impress with its incredible swimming ability. One is left to wonder how a seal manages to escape the polar bear that seems to be fully at home on land as well as under water.

I find that photographing the bears through the length of the pool gives better results for b&w images but once in a while one gets a decent color.

In the space of time of getting my camera out of the bag this bear managed 50 yards in a couple of seconds and was sitting looking at me through the glass.

Great series Jan. I find the OP instills drama. The right paw
disappearing to the surface, as if he reaching for something.

This is a great series. Amazing animals! Looking at the 2nd
picture, one might think they have gills!

The polar bear in the opening had a range of what I call "polar bear toys" to keep him occupied and he was reaching for one of them with his paw out of the water.

Kaska weighted 662 lbs. Oct 31
Star weighted 530 lbs Oct 31

I took this picture December 10th so they probably had both put on more weight.

Those bears look so fluid, maybe they're yogis? Yogi bears heheheh
